My twitter account is, throughout the day, peppered with questions from young followers. So, yes, I have a brain as big as a planet. Yet, the number one question I am asked is not:
- Does God exist?
- What is the meaning of Life?
- Doctor Who?
No, rather than one of the above philosophically challenging questions of deep meaning, what most often is asked is: Can you get Justin Bieber (@justinbieber), Lady Gaga (@ladygaga), Katy Perry (@katyperry), etc., to follow me?
Well, I’ve reviewed the numerous advise blogs on this issue and found them wanting. Below is a Harvard Business School perspective that turns you from being just another mindless fan into a meaningful marketer of your verified account holder’s fame and financial fortune. I’ve tried to keep my words simple but…
Let’s start with a definition and a realization
Minion: 1. a gushing in love follower of a famous person or on Twitter, a verified account holder 2. a favored or highly regarded person
How can one person be both? Because a celebrity needs minions! As minions you are held in high regard because without you, a verified account holder is nothing! Who are they without their audience? And the greater his/her celebrity, the greater the utter need for followers insanely committed to them. If you leave, they are finished. Yes, you are slave to the celebrity, but ultimately you hold the power. Remember that!
Minion Training
- Clean up your twitter account
- Look at your twitter profile carefully
- The number following you and the number you follow should be near equal
- Far better to have more people following you than that you follow
- Nearly all verified accounts will have similar profile of following far fewer than follow them
- Use twitcleaner to make sure your twitter account won’t be considered spam and get you unfollowed or deemed not worthy of consideration
- What’s your Klout score? Work to get it over 25 at least.
- One way is by engaging lesser celebrities to work your way up to the big, big fish!
- Talking to the less well known verified account holder drags your Klout score up so that you become, little Pinocchios, a real person
Be a Useful Minion
- Fame is fleeting!
- Celebrities really need your help! So provide it!
- More than half of most celebrities followers are fake.
- They buy twitter followers because the real ones are hard to come by.
- Use your twitter account as the celebrities personal assistant on twitter
- Help get needful things done
- Most important thing you can do with your twitter account: Tweet their links!
- Every time you mention a verified account, include a link to help advertise their new record, book, concert, website whatever.
- Become active on all social media not just Twitter and support them on all
- Like them on Facebook, +1 them on Google+, YouTube etc.
Tweet Smart
- Smart tweet: Carol, I really like @josephjett so here’s a link to his new blog check it out! https://www.joseph-jett.com
- Less effective tweet: @josephjett Follow me! I love you!
- A smart tweet mentions the verified accounts name (they will see the post) while making clear your desire to help rather than being a mere nuisance
- The link you’ve created by including a clickable link to the celebrity’s website is called a one-way backlink
- That one-way backlink is your best ticket to standing out from the crowd as an intelligent minion
- It is most helpful marketing that only you have the power to provide the verified account
- Believe it or not. Celebrities are in this to make money!
Celebrity Popularity Contest
- Google counts every one-way backlink as a show of popularity
- Influence measurers like Klout use it to proclaim your celebrity more popular than the next
- Helping your celebrity will get you noticed!
- Saying his or her twitter name does nothing!
- Repeating @justinbieber ad infinitum is worthless
- Saying “@justinbieber https://www.justinbieber.com” and you’ve jumped over the mindless hoards in his affection
- You’ve helped to market his product, increase his brand, and benefited his bottomline
- Including a one-way backlink does everything!
So, in a nutshell, clean up your twitter account and then begin tweeting their links!
